History
In the second year of Tenryaku (952 CE), Kura Shu, the head priest of Hira Shrine, traveled with a statue of Sugawara no Michizane. The statue stopped moving at a certain spot on the lakeshore, which was then designated as the site for the shrine's enshrinement. Later, in the second year of Ten'ō (1683 CE), the current shrine buildings were constructed under the patronage of Matsudaira Masayoshi, the lord of the Aizu Domain.
