Founded in 735 CE (Tenpyo 7) by the monk Giki. In 787 CE (Enryaku 6), a seven-hall complex (Shichido Garan) was constructed to mourn children, giving the temple its name. It was later relocated and rebuilt in Nakashima District by Yasunaga, the lord of Katchibana Castle, and subsequently moved to Osu by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
