Founded during the Nara period in the Shoki era, it is traditionally said to have been established by the monk Giki as a sub-temple of Kanfuku-ji. In the 2nd year of the Tenbun era (1533 CE), the main hall was built on the current site. In the 2nd year of the Tensho era (1574 CE), the monk Baizan became the founding abbot of the temple's revival. In the 7th year of the Bunsei era (1824 CE), the Chita Shikoku pilgrimage circuit was established, and the temple became the 46th site.
