Founded in 1671 CE (Kanbun 11) by the monk Eikou Shonin, with the patronage of Takei Shinzaemon Nobutake. The temple was built on a stone mound constructed to pray for protection against the floods of the Arakawa River. Although it was repeatedly destroyed by fires and air raids, a provisional main hall was used until 2009, after which the current new main hall was reconstructed.
