In the Jogan era of the early Heian period, the monk Gyokyo of Daianji Temple enshrined the kami from Usa Jingu (Usa Shrine) on Mount Otoko, located south-southwest of Kyoto. By the late Heian period, the shrine received special favor from Emperor Shirakawa and was revered alongside Ise Jingu as one of two ancestral shrines. It is also known as the place where Minamoto no Yoriie came of age and has long been worshipped as a god of war.
