History
In 1686 CE (Jōkyō 3), by the will of Shimazu Mitsuhisa, a sacred object (shintai) for Tsunaza Tenjin was created, and a ceremony to invite the deity (kanshō) was held on August 25 of the same year. Tsunaza Tenjin derives its name from the place where Michizane, while traveling to his post as Dazaifu Kanjōsui (Governor of Dazaifu), laid down a ship's rope to rest. The head shrine is Dazaifu Tenmangu (Dazaifu Tenjin Grand Shrine).
