Iwamotoji

日本、〒786-0004 高知県高岡郡四万十町茂串町3−13

4.2(995)

A temple of the Shingon Chisan sect, with the mountain name Fujiiyama and the court name Gochi-in. It is the 37th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.

History

It is traditionally said to have been founded by the monk Rowan under an imperial decree from Emperor Shomu during the Tenpyo period (729-749 CE). It flourished as a lodging temple (shukubo) in the late medieval period. Between 1652 and 1688, the chief priest (bettou) was transferred from Fukuenmanji, and the temple was renamed Iwamotoji. It was closed in the early Meiji period but was restored in 1889 (Meiji 22).

What visitors say

As the 37th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, the main hall ceiling is decorated with numerous board paintings (itae) collected from across the country. While retaining a historical background tied to the seven wonders legend of Kobo Daishi, it is characterized by a pop and unique atmosphere that incorporates modern art. The grounds enshrine the principal images of the Five Buddhas, offering a serene space for worship.
