Legend holds that the temple originated when Asahina Saburo Yasushige, who was defeated in the Heiji Rebellion, established the Reiso-in. It was converted into a temple in 1339 CE (Rei-o 2). It was revived in 1445 CE (Bun-an 2), but was later destroyed by Miki Motosuna. It was subsequently re-established in 1604 CE (Keicho 9) by Zenko of the Shingon sect. During the Edo period, it was venerated as the first station of the Hida Seven Kannon.
