The shrine's origin is said to date back to the enshrinement of Anohi-hime, who was brought from Wu (China) during the reign of Emperor Sujin and passed away in the 76th year of Emperor Nintoku's reign. In 785 CE (Enryaku 4), by imperial decree of Emperor Kanmu, the shrine buildings were newly constructed, and Emperor Sujin and Emperor Nintoku were also enshrined. Although the shrine was destroyed by fire during a war, the main hall was rebuilt in 1594 CE (Keichō 9) by Toyotomi Hideyori.
