History
Founded in 594 CE (Suiko 2) at the behest of Prince Shōtoku, using a donated residence of the Hasui clan. After the death of Sugawara no Michizane, the temple enshrined an Eleven-Faced Kannon statue said to have been carved by him himself, and was renamed Dōmyō-ji (Temple of the Enlightened Way) after this title. During the Kamakura period, it became a branch temple of Sai-dō-ji and later served as a prayer temple for the shogunate.
