Founded in 1666 CE (Kanbun 6) by the Great Monastic Priest (Daizōzu) Keikai. As a sub-temple of Kan'ei-ji, it also served as the memorial temple (bodaiso) for Hōjūin, the biological mother of Tokugawa Iemitsu. In 1723 CE (Kyōhō 8), the temple was renamed from 'Jōen'in' to 'Jōmyōin'.
