Founded in 1242 CE (Ninji 3) by the Dazaifu Shōni (a branch of the Dazaifu Fu) and Muto Moriyoshi, who invited the monk Enni (Eisai). The construction was supported by Song dynasty merchants. In 1243 CE (Kangen 1), it was designated as a government-affiliated temple (kandera).
