The founding date is unknown, but there is a legend that Chiba Tsunetsune had Unkei carve a statue of Jurokuannon in the early Kamakura period, and that this statue was moved to this location during the Jōkyū War. Due to this legend, the area came to be known as "Fujigusa Village," which became the origin of the current place name "Fujigaya." It is said to have been established as a temple in 1223 CE.
