The temple was founded by Hosokawa Yorinaga on the site of a mountain villa that had belonged to Fujiwara Noriyoshi during the Kamakura period. Hosokawa Yorinaga invited Hekitan Shuko and established Muso Soseki as the founding abbot. The temple was destroyed by fire during the Onin War but was rebuilt in the Edo period, with the Kondo (main hall) reconstructed. During the Meiji period, it merged with Ryuji-ji and Enkei-ji.
