The temple was founded by Hosokawa Yorinaga, the regent of the Muromachi Shogunate, on the site where the poet Fujiwara no Kiyoyasu had a villa during the Kamakura period. Although the temple complex was destroyed by fire during the Onin War, it was restored in the Edo period, including the reconstruction of the abbot's quarters, with the support of the Hosokawa clan.
