Jodo Sect, Injōzan, Dairen-ji Temple (8th Station of the Rokuyō Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage)
京都市左京区正往寺町457
A Jodo Sect temple known for prayers for safe childbirth, originating from a prayer made by the consort of Emperor Go-Kōmyō. It is also the 8th station of the Rokuyō Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage.
History
Founded in 1599 CE (Keichō 4) by Shōyō in the present-day Wakamiya Gojō area of Shimogyō Ward, Kyoto City. It became known as a temple for prayers for safe childbirth following an imperial decree from the consort of Emperor Go-Kōmyō. During the early Meiji era, Buddhist statues were transferred here from Gion Shrine as part of the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. The temple was relocated in 1944 as a countermeasure against air raids, and after merging with Jōnen-ji in the post-war period, it reached its current location.
