This single independent temple of the Jodo-shu sect was founded in 1496 CE (Meiō 5) by the monk Kinren-sha Shūshū. In 1591 CE (Tenshō 19), it received a Goshuin-jō (official certificate of land rights) granting 10 koku of temple lands from Tokugawa Ieyasu. From the second shogun onward, the temple was guaranteed support through the issuance of new certificates upon each succession of the shogunate.
