History
It is said to have been founded in 735 CE (Tenpyo 7) by Gyoji, who followed a divine dream. Gyoji carved a statue of Kannon Bosatsu (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) from a piece of incense wood that had been launched into the air, and built a hall on this sacred site. In 1178 CE (Jicho 2), the Buddha statues from the neighboring Enmanji temple were transferred here, and the temple was renamed Jokou Enmanji.
