In the first year of Meiji (1868 CE), the Yasukuni Shrine was established by Shimazu Tadayoshi. In the seventh year of Meiji (1874 CE), it was renamed Kagoshima Shokonsha (Soul-Calling Shrine) under official state rites. After being destroyed by fire during the Satsuma Rebellion, it was rebuilt and renamed Kagoshima-ken Kokugoku Jinja in the fourteenth year of Showa (1939 CE). In the twenty-third year of Showa (1948 CE), the shrine was relocated and completed at its current site in Kusumota-cho.
