In the early modern period, the shrine was venerated as a guardian deity of the Kihon (the northeast direction, considered inauspicious). In 2001, the old shrine buildings were donated by the Upper Shrine of Danjū Kawakami Shrine in Yoshino and relocated here due to the construction of the Ōtaki Dam.
