創建は不詳であるが、安曇部氏によって祖神が祀られたのが創祀とされる。古くは一座であったが、中世に大宮・南宮・若宮の三殿とし、天文18年には「五所大明神」と称したこともある。信濃国三宮を称し、名神大社に列されている。
