According to tradition, between 1617 and 1619 CE (Genna 3 to 5), a stone shrine was built and the deity Kaido was enshrined following a divine revelation. In the mid-Meiji period, Funatsu and Hiruko shrines were merged into this shrine. A torii gate was erected in 1927 CE (Shōwa 2), and a torii gate made of whale bone was dedicated in 1973 CE (Shōwa 48). In 2004 CE (Heisei 16), the shrine became connected to the mainland as part of a harbor development project.
