This Soto sect temple was founded in 1396 by Utsunomiya Mitsutsuna, the 12th head of the Shimotsuke Utsunomiya clan. Although it was destroyed by arson set by the Aizu Domain during the Boshin War, it was subsequently rebuilt. During the Meiji period, a portion of the hair of Gamo Kunpei, a pioneer of the Sonnō joi (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians) movement, was interred here, and a tombstone was erected.
