Kakumei, a Shugendo practitioner active in the mid-Edo period, dedicated his life to the opening of Mount Ontake and the improvement of its hiking paths. He passed away in 1787 CE (Tenmei 7) at the shore of the second pond (Ninooike), located at the ninth station of Mount Ontake. His disciples, who revered his virtue, established the Kakumei-kou (Kakumei Society), which contributed to the prosperity of modern Ontake faith.
