The shrine's origins trace back to 1631 CE (Kan'ei 8), when Matsura Tadanao, the lord of Hizen, enshrined four ancestral spirits on Reijunsan (Spirit Camellia Mountain) within Hizen Castle. It received the reverence of successive domain lords, who funded the construction and repair of shrine buildings using domain funds. During the Meiji era, four shrines—Reijunsan, Shichirō, Otake, and Hachiman—were merged. In 1880 CE (Meiji 13), the current shrine buildings were erected on the present site, and the shrine was renamed to its current name.
