Originally known as Moto Kamo Myojin, the shrine was established when Akamatsu Mansuke enshrined a branch spirit from Kamo Shrine. In 1458 CE (Choroku 2), Teokifune Oomikami and Hikazachi Oomikami were enshrined from Kii Province. In 1171 CE (Jōan 2), Minatane no Oomikami was transferred here, and the shrine became Arakawa Shrine. In 1533 CE (Bunmei 2), the shrine moved to its current site. After suffering destruction due to war, it was relocated again to the current site on Mt. Miya in 1711 CE (Shōtoku 1), and the shrine buildings were restored.
