In 1187, Inama Shigenari, the lord of Mashigata Castle, followed a divine dream and established a small shrine enshrining Yamato Takeru and his consort. Later, the name 'Shirotori' (White Bird) was changed to the kanji for 'Kamitori' (Divine Bird), resulting in the current name. The shrine was destroyed by fire in 1582, but the shrine buildings were subsequently rebuilt and donated by Uesugi Kagetora.
