Founded in 1359 CE (Bun'ō 4) or 1358 CE (Bun'ō 3) during the Nanboku-chō period by the scholar-monk Gōhō as a sub-temple of Toji. The main image, the Five Great Mahavairocana Buddhas, was discovered by Kenbō in a broken state at Anjō-ji and Jō-ji, repaired, and enshrined here. During the Edo period, it was designated as a center for the promotion of the Shingon sect as a whole and produced many scholar-monks.
