History

This shrine is a branch of Kumano Hongu Taisha in Wakayama Prefecture. It was founded in 1783 CE (Tenmei 3) by Ishikawa Hikojiemon, a samurai from the former Kawagoe Domain in Musashi Province (now Saitama Prefecture), who established the shrine after suffering damage from volcanic ash fallout caused by the Tenmei eruption. The shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1895 CE (Meiji 28) and again in 1995 CE (Heisei 7) to their current form.
