Established in 1475 CE (Muromachi period) by Sadamori Mizuno, the first lord of Ogawa Castle, as the family temple for the Mizuno clan. It became the head temple (kondojo) of the Sozan school of the Soto sect, growing into a major temple with many branch temples in Owari, Mikawa, and Totomi provinces. During the Edo period, it received protection from the Owari Tokugawa family. Today, it is designated as the 15th station of the Shikoku Direct Transmission Kobo Daishi 88 Pilgrimage Sites.
