Founded during the Keicho era (1596–1615 CE) by the priest Densho. Initially a Kannon hall situated on the levee of the Tone River, it was later relocated to its current site. The temple was destroyed by fire in 1836 and severely damaged in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, but was rebuilt in 1936.
