Founded in 985 CE (Kanka 1) by the monk Yoshitsushi as a sub-temple of Jizo-in in the current Nishioka area of Kurashiki City. It was moved to the foot of Tsurukata Mountain during the Muromachi period, and relocated to its present site in 1624 CE (Kan'ei 1), where it was renamed Hozu-kan Kanryuji Temple. The temple complex was destroyed by fire in the mid-Edo period, but the main hall was rebuilt in 1749 CE (Kan'ei 2) and remains to this day.
