The shrine's origins are said to date back to the Hoeki era (770–781 CE), when Takekanamihiko-no-Mikoto was enshrined. In 811 CE (Kōnin 2), Sakanoue no Tamuramaro invited the deity of Kashima Daimyōjin from Hitachi Province to this location. Since then, it has served as the general guardian of Shirakawa, receiving deep devotion from successive feudal lords. In 1796 CE (Kansei 7), Matsudaira Sadanobu dedicated a shieldless armor. Although the shrine was destroyed by fire in 1910 CE (Meiji 43), it was rebuilt in 1912 CE (Taishō 1).
