Tokugawa Nariaki, the ninth daimyo of the Mito Domain, constructed this shrine in the center of the Kodo-kan grounds as a key facility. It was established in 1857 CE (Ansei 4) when the Kodo-kan opened, enshrining a branch of Kashima Jingu, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Hitachi Province. The main hall (honden) and its associated structures were destroyed by fire during an air raid in 1945 CE (Shōwa 20). In 1974 CE (Shōwa 49), the shrine received the old main hall and associated structures from Kaze-ki Miya (Wind and Sun Prayer Shrine), a subsidiary shrine located within the precincts of the Naiku (Inner Shrine) of Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine).
