According to shrine tradition, it was founded in the Nara period as the guardian shrine of the Kokubunji (Provincial Temple) in Harima Province. In the Genroku era, Honda Tadaaki provided land for the expansion of the precincts, and the shrine has since been revered by the Himeji Domain.
