The founding date is unknown, but it is presumed that a sacred grove (chinju no mori) already existed during the Sengoku period. Before the Meiji era, it was a combined shrine with Hie Shrine. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, the attached temple (bettōji), Rissei-in, was abolished. In 1872, it was classified as a village shrine (mura-ya) under the modern shrine rank system.
