History
Founded in 1471 by Rensei, the fourth son of Rennyo, as Tsuchiyama Gofuku. It underwent multiple relocations and restorations before moving to its current location. During the Sengoku period, it served as a central force in the Echigo Ikkō-ikki (Ikkō-ikki uprising in Echigo Province). After being burned down by Ishiguro Narinaga, it was rebuilt on land donated by Sasa Narumasa. During the Edo period, it received protection from the Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain, and the 10th daimyo, Maeda Harunaga, received his Buddhist ordination here.
