In the 10th year of the Enryaku era (791 CE), Saicho rebuilt the halls and monastic buildings and enshrined Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) as the principal deity. In the 6th year of the Hoen era (1140 CE), Sato Yoshikaze took monastic vows at this temple and became known as Saigyo.
