According to tradition, the shrine was founded in the 6th year of Emperor Kōan's reign (386 BCE). It is one of the Yoshino Hassha Meishin, the eight guardian deities of Mount Yoshino-Omine, and was formerly known as 'Katte Meishin'. The shrine was destroyed by arson in 2001, but a new main hall (honden) was completed on October 26, 2025, and the sacred object (shintai) was returned to its original relocation site.
