It is said that the shrine was founded in 865 CE (Jogan 7) to enshrine the deity Asama-no-Kami for rituals to quell volcanic eruptions of Mount Fuji. During the Heian period, it was recorded as a Meishin Taisha (Grand Shrine of Famous Deities) and has long been discussed as one of the candidate shrines for the main Asama worship sites. It was designated a Kosha (village shrine) in 1871 (Meiji 4) and promoted to a Kensha (prefectural shrine) in 1924 (Taisho 13).
