History
The founding date is unknown, but there are theories that it was established as the guardian shrine of a shoen (manorial estate) or as the guardian shrine when the village was divided in the early Edo period. Due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, the Yakuji Temple, which served as the betto-ji (head temple), was abolished. In 1907, following the merger of shrines, the Suwa Shrine within the precincts was merged, and the name was changed to Kawakami Suwa Shrine.
