Founded in 784 CE (Enryaku 3) by Dengyo Daishi as the Tendai sect temple Enyuji. In 1235 CE (Kagei 1), Zenkai took refuge in Shonin and renamed the temple Shoumyouji, making it one of the Kawano Kumonto that marked the beginning of Jodo Shinshu propagation in the Nono-Omi region. In 1758 CE (Houryaku 8), the prefix Kawano was added to the temple name, and in 1876 CE (Meiji 9), it became a Kanpatsu (head temple under the Kyoto branch).
