According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 811 CE (Kounin 2). It is well-known as a shrine associated with the silk industry. In 1010 CE (Kankou 7), the shrine buildings were established by Sabu Shoushu Michihide and others. Later, they were rebuilt and restored by Masayuki Hoshina, the first daimyo of the Aizu Domain, and Yoritaka Matsudaira, the eighth daimyo. In 1876 CE (Meiji 9), it was classified as a Kensha (prefectural shrine) under the modern shrine ranking system.
