Founded in 1655 CE (Meiryoku 1) by Kanemasa Katsuhei, a wealthy farmer in the area. The temple served as the family temple for the Kanemasa clan. During the Ueno War of 1868, the Chogii (Loyalist) forces took refuge here, resulting in an attack by the New Government Army. Bullet holes from that battle remain visible on the gate doors of the main entrance.
