In 1651 CE (Keian 4), the second lord of the Owari domain, Tokugawa Mitsutomo, established the main hall and other structures to honor the memory of his father, Yoshinao. The temple's founding priest (kaizan) was Jonei Kaku Ton. Throughout the Edo period, it served as the family temple for the Owari domain lords, with numerous halls and spirit houses (reiya) constructed. Many buildings were destroyed in a major fire in 1785 CE (Tenmei 5), but the temple was revived in the following years by the ninth domain lord, Tokugawa Munetada, and the 19th abbot, Bannyo Kana.
