Its origins are said to lie in the enshrinement of a branch spirit from Keta Taisha, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Noto Province. The shrine flourished through reverence from Kanemori Kinoshita, lord of Mashima Castle, who honored it as the guardian deity of the castle and the Ujigami (local tutelary deity) of Furukawa. In 1907 (Meiji 40), it was designated as a shrine eligible to receive offerings of food and cloth for the deities, and in 1926 (Taisho 15), it was elevated to the rank of Kenja (prefectural shrine).
