It is said to be the birthplace of Sugawara no Michizane, and Kichijoin, a temple enshrining Kichijoten (the Goddess of Fortune), was also established as a family temple. Despite the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement of the Meiji era, the statue of Kichijoten and Kichijoin have been preserved as a Buddhist hall structure reflecting the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.
