According to tradition, the temple originated during the Kōnin era when Kōkai carved Bishamonten, Kichōten (Lakshmi), and Zengyoshi Dōji (Samantabhadra) from a cypress tree that was emitting light and enshrined them. The entire mountain was burned down during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign in Shikoku. In 1659 CE (Manji 2), the temple was merged with the head temple Hinoki-ji and rebuilt on its current site. In 1976 CE (Shōwa 51), the 'Shikoku Toyo Shichifukujin Reijo' (Shikoku Eastern Yo Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage) was established among the nearby pilgrimage stations.
