This shrine enshrines three generations of the Kikuchi clan who fought on the side of the Southern Court during the Nanbokucho period (Northern and Southern Courts). It was established in the Meiji era on the site of the former Kikuchi Castle by the Kumamoto Domain and was later promoted to a Betekku Kanpeisha (a special official shrine). In the 12th year of the Taisho era (1923 CE), Takehiro and Takehisa were added as principal enshrined deities.
