Located in Nishiyamacho, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, this shrine is the head shrine of the 44 Kimiya Shrines across Japan. The enshrined deities are Itsu-no-o-no-Mikoto as the main kami, along with Omononushi-no-Mikoto and Yamato-Takeru-no-Mikoto. According to tradition, the shrine was founded in 710 CE (Wado 3) during the early Heian period when a wooden statue became caught in a fisherman's net, accompanied by a divine oracle stating, 'I am Itsu-no-o-no-Mikoto; enshrine me in this place.' It is also said that Sakamoto Tamamaro, the Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force against the Emishi, prayed for victory in battle and established branch shrines in various locations. The 'Great Camphor Tree of Kimiya' within the shrine grounds is a nationally designated natural monument with an age exceeding 2,000 years. Known as the largest tree on Honshu (with a trunk circumference of approximately 24 meters, ranking second nationally), it is a major attraction. Long revered as a deity of 'incoming fortune and auspiciousness,' the shrine has recently gained popularity as a power spot and is a famous sightseeing destination in the Izu region.
